Beaufort is a city of traditional and gracious beauty, striking mansions of Pre-Revolutionary and Pre Civil War eras, majestic oaks, and productive marshes filled with shrimp, crabs and oysters. It is a city of antiquity and pride where family roots and accomplishments count a great deal. The entire downtown area is on the national Historic Register and several homes have been designated as National Historic Landmarks for federal preservation by the Department of the Interior.
Beaufort has three military bases, Parris Island, the Marine Corps Air Station and the Beaufort Naval Hospital.
Several popular movies have been made in this area also known as the Lowcountry including The Great Santini, Forest Gump, The Prince of Tides, and GI Jane.
